In contrast to the idealism and subjectivity of Romanticism, realist painting advocated an objective view of the reality represented by the work of art. Is realism really true to life? This question, obvious at first sight, is posed in the exhibition organised by the Belvedere, which, through works gathered from the Belvedere’s own collection, examines how realist painting approached reality by means of a twofold strategy: on the one hand, the meticulousness of pictorial technique and, on the other, the approach to social realities normally ignored by Romanticism and Academicism.Īlthough the term “Realism” has been used to describe works of art since antiquity itself, Realism as a movement is considered to have emerged in the mid-19th century. The influence on Corinth’s oeuvre of changes in both technique and his perspectives on life form a core context for the exhibition as curator Alexander Klee explores the development of the painter’s style.From 18 March to 1 November 2022, the Belvedere in Vienna presents “ True to Life: Realist Painting from 1850 to 1950“, an exhibition that examines the changes and continuities in realist painting through works by artists often unknown to the general public.

Inevitably, then, Corinth’s work covered a diversity of approaches that often defy easy classification, where an erotic painting of a young woman might hang next to a homely family portrait. That same group provided the inspiration for the establishment of the Vienna Secession by Klimt and others in 1897.Īfter leaving Munich, Corinth joined the Berlin Secession, rising to become one of its most acclaimed members and to take leading positions (including that of chairperson) in the organisation itself.Ĭorinth’s life saw painting in Europe grow out from, for example, 19th-century realism to produce impressionism, expressionism and the rise of modernism the Belvedere exhibition follows Corinth on his parallel journey through an equivalent artistic evolution. In 1892, for example, Corinth co-founded the Munich Succession artist association that broke with the traditional conservative approaches of the time. The German painter, Lovis Corinth (1858 – 1925), is one such artist.Ĭonsidered one of Germany’s greatest painters of the late 19th and early 20th century, Corinth’s legacy derives partly from his output but also from his role in the artistic community. If we’re lucky, the latter leave us with a remarkable collection of works that spans tastes and genres. Others apply their talents to different styles as their artistic approach changes.
